After attending meetings related to the homeless and drug using population in Abbotsford for a week, a 20-year-old Indo-Canadian criminology practicum student from the University of the Fraser Valley took out a printout of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs that she’d been given in one of her classes and said: 

“The thing is, while people’s needs for food, water, warmth, rest and safety are more basic than their need for belonging and love… here in Abbotsford, the two seem to rely on each other. People aren’t going to get their basic needs met without being seen and treated as part of the community.
