Businesses near one of Abbotsford’s overdose prevention sites (OPS) were furious. So was the strata council of a nearby housing complex. The OPS closes sometimes as early at 4:00 p.m. “The staff go home, but the drug users linger around. Customers are afraid to come to our restaurants. Residents are afraid to walk their dogs. We met with the police. We met with the city. We met with the health authority. Nothing changed…

“It wasn’t until we met with some drug users themselves that we started to get somewhere. They told us of course the homeless drug users are going to linger around… where else do they have to go? I feel like we finally have the chance to make some progress because the people who actually know what they are talking about are part of the conversation.”
